Biography

Dr. Anne O'Connor graduated with a joint first-class honours degree in Italian and History from University College Cork, Ireland and in 1999 completed an MA in Italian at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, U.S.A.  She completed a PhD under the supervision of Prof. Mike Caesar at the University of Birmingham, U.K.: the title of her thesis was 'Death and Memory: Representations of Florence 1807-1865. She has lectured in University College Cork, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Birmingham and has been a lecturer in NUI Galway since 2003. 


She has been the recipient of scholarships, fellowships and awards from the IRC, IRCHSS, the Royal Irish Academy, NAIRTL, AHRC, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the European Union. Her research interests include nineteenth-century history and literature; romanticism; translation studies; travel literature; transnational Ireland; cultural mediators, language teaching methodologies and community-based learning. She has published widely in these areas and has presented many papers at international conferences. 

Anne O’Connor is the co-editor (in collaboration with Dr. Dáire Keogh (DCU) and Dr. Colin Barr (University of Aberdeen)) of The Correspondence of Paul Cullen (Irish Manuscripts Commission), a project that received a major grant from the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences.  As part of this ambitious project, she has gathered and translated the Italian correspondence of Cardinal Paul Cullen. 

She is currently the Principal Investigator in the project ‘Changing Words/Changing Worlds’ which is examining translation in nineteenth-century Ireland. The project has been funded by the Irish Research Council (2013-2015) under its Research Project Grants Scheme. 
 
Anne O'Connor is the coordinator for the first year Italian programme, the evening diplomas in Italian, community-based learning in Italian and Italian in the Youth Academy. She lectures to all years from first years to Masters students in areas ranging from Italian language to translation studies and from intercultural communication to the Risorgimento.

Teaching Interests

I teach language, literature and culture to all years and at all levels. I have a particular interest in teaching translation and in community-based learning. I developed the first Service Learning Course in the College of Arts in 2007 which was awarded the European Language Label for innovation and creativity. I have completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning at Higher Level (2009) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice (2012). I contribute to evening diploma classes and outreach courses run by the university.
