Biography

Is Léachtóir le Gaeilge é an Dr Liam Ó hAisibéil i Scoil na dTeangacha, na Litríochtaí agus na gCultúr in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh. Bronnadh sparánacht taighde ón gCrannchur Náisiúnta air sa bhliain 2008, chun taighde a dhéanamh ar logainmneacha Chontae Ros Comáin. Bhain sé céim PhD amach i bhfianaise an taighde sin in 2013. Bhí Liam fostaithe cheana ag Ollscoil Luimnigh (2010-2011); mar scoláire Fhondúireacht Ollscoile na hÉireann-Cheanada ag Ollscoil Mhuire Naofa in Halifax, Ceanada (2013-2014); agus mar Léachtóir le Gaeilge ag Coláiste San Aingeal, Sligeach (2014-2015). Tá tréimhsí taighde caite aige leis an Tionscadal Locus ag Coláiste na hOllscoile, Corcaigh, agus ag Ollscoil Cambridge, Sasana. Bhí sé ina thaighdeoir ar shloinnte Éireannacha don tionscadal foclóireachta ‘Family Names of Britain and Ireland’  ag University of the West of England, Briostó, ó 2013-2016.
Múineann Liam cúrsaí sa litríocht mheánaoiseach, san ainmeolaíocht, agus sna healaíona dúchasacha. Tá spéis ar leith aige i logainmneacha agus sloinnte, agus in ábhar a bhaineann leis na réimsí sin i dtraidisiún lámhscríbhinní na hÉireann, m.sh. annála, tráchtais ghinealais srl. Is comhúdar é, i dteannta leis an Dr Kay Muhr, ar an bhfoclóir Dictionary of Family Names of Ireland (le foilsiú ag Oxford University Press).

Dr. Liam Ó hAisibéil is a Lecturer in Irish in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the National University of Ireland, Galway. In 2008, he was awarded a National Lottery research bursary by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to undertake his doctoral degree research on Irish place-names, which was completed in 2013. Liam has worked at the University of Limerick (2010-2011); as an Ireland-Canada University Foundation Tutor at Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Canada (2013-2014); and as a Lecturer in Irish at St. Angela's College, Sligo (2014-2015). He spent periods of research with the Locus Project at University College, Cork, and at the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge University, England. He was an Irish surnames consultant for the lexicographic project ‘Family Names of Britain and Ireland’ at the University of the West of England, Bristol from 2013-2016.
Liam teaches courses on medieval literature, onomastics, and on the indigenous arts at NUI Galway, and is particularly interested in place-names and surnames research, and in material relating to these areas in the Irish manuscript tradition. He is a co-author (with Dr. Kay Muhr) of the forthcoming Dictionary of Family Names of Ireland (to be published by Oxford University Press).

Ainmeolaíocht - logainmneacha, sloinnte, ainmneacha pearsanta, buafhocail aidiachtúla agus leasainmneacha na Gaeilge, ainmneacha sléibhe; béaloideas - traidisiún na scéalaíochta, ábhar Gaeilge i mBailiúchán na Scol; an tsibhialtacht Cheilteach agus forbairt na litríochta sa Ghaeilge.

Onomastics - place-names, surnames, personal names, adjectival epithets and nicknames in Irish, mountain names; folklore - folktale tradition, Irish-language material in Bailiúchán na Scol; Celtic Civilisation and the development of literature in Irish.
