Biography

Dr Amanda Slevin is a sociologist, educator and qualitative researcher who joined the School of Political Science and Sociology, NUI Galway in February 2017. With a background in community development, adult literacy and community education (face to face and virtual delivery), Amanda has worked in higher education since 2010. Amanda is a member of the School's Teaching and Learning Committee and is involved in the development of the new BSc in Applied Social Sciences and the MA in Politics and Sociology.

Amanda’s research interests include state hydrocarbon management, Irish political economy, environmental sustainability, ideology and resource management, transformative education and community activism. The author of Gas, oil and the Irish state: Understanding the dynamics and conflicts of hydrocarbon management (2016, Manchester University Press), Amanda is involved in ‘Generation What’ a pan-European research project on the views and experiences of 18-34 year olds which culminated in a TV documentary due to be aired by RTÉ in Spring 2017. Amanda has previously worked with the School of Sociology in UCD, the SPHeRE Programme (RCSI), An Cosán Virtual Community College, Donegal Vocational Education Committee (now Donegal ETB) and several community and voluntary sector organisations. 

Research Interests

Amanda’s research interests include state hydrocarbon management, Irish political economy, environmental sustainability, ideology and resource management, qualitative methods, transformative education and community activism.
