Research Interests

Gerry leads the MEDication Adherence across the Lifespan (MEDAL) research group at NUIG and is currently linked to several leading health psychology research groups in Europe including The Psychobiology Group at University College London, the Health Psychology Group in Aberdeen, the Newcastle Health Psychology Group and the Centre for Health and Behaviour Change  at the University of Stirling. Over the last 5 years the main focus of this programme of research has been on describing, understanding and changing medication taking behaviour. Five key overarching questions include: (1) What is the extent of non-adherence to treatments? (2) What are the causes of non-adherence to treatment? (3) What are the consequences of non-adherence (4) How can we improve the measurement of medication taking behaviour? (5) What interventions support optimal medication taking behaviour? Gerry was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS) between 2010 and 2014 and is currently a member of the Editorial Board of Psychology & Health. In 2013 he became an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Health Psychology and in 2015 he became an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine. He is currently the co-director of the Health and Well-Being cluster of the Whitaker Institute at NUI, Galway.
