Biography

Jane is the Director of the mHealth Research Group  and the Co-Leader of the Health and Wellbeing Cluster in the Whitaker Institute.

The bedrock of her research is underpinned by the theme 'Health Behaviours for Healthy Ageing' and she has recently secured funding in excess of €5 million euro from the EU to conduct research on personalised technological solutions for healthy ageing. She is  is an active member of the H2020 European Network for the Joint Evaluation of Connected Health Technologies (ENJECT) and is a recognised expert in mobile technology and health behaviour change and has given multiple Invited Keynotes in the area of mHealth both nationally and internationally.

Jane is an Associate Editor of the Journal Psychology and Health and on the Editorial Board for International Journal of Behavioural Medicine and the British Journal of Health Psychology. She is former Chair of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI)  Division of Health Psychology and is an active member of the European Health Psychology Society where she is currently a member of the 2018 Conference Committee. Jane also serves on the Research Advisory Board for the Irish Cancer Society.

Jane obtained her PhD in Psychology in 1995 from NUI Galway. She worked as a Researcher in the Educational Research Centre and as a Lecturer in Carlow Institute of Technology before taking up an appointment as a Lecturer in the School of Psychology in NUI, Galway in 1997 where she has contributed to and directed the MSc in Health Psychology and Structured PhD in Psychology and Health.

 RESEARCH INTERESTS: 'Health Behaviours for Healthy Ageing'

Specific interests in:
  • Developing optimum interventions to promote health and wellbeing
  • mHealth: Using new technologies to drive interventions to change health behaviours.
  • Health Behaviour change: Promoting preventative health behaviours including: Cancer screening, vaccination, self-monitoring, exercise participation.

Methods of expertise include:
  • Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs)
  • Multivariate statistical analysis
  • Use of online interventions (and new technologies to promote behaviour change)

    Jane Walsh's primary research interest are underpinned by the theme 'Health Behaviour for Healthy Ageing'. She is interested in developing the optimum interventions to change health behaviours in order to enhance health and wellbeing.

    Jane is the Director of the mHealth Research Group and recently secured grants in excess of €5 million euro in EU funding to conduct research on personalised technological solutions for healthy ageing. She is an active member of the  H2020 European Network for the Joint Evaluation of Connected Health Technologies (ENJECT)

    Jane is the Co-Leader of the Health and Wellbeing Cluster in the Whitaker Institute and a member of the Irish Cancer Society Research Advisory Board. She is an Associate Editor of the Journal Psychology and Health and on the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine and British Journal of Health Psychology.

    Teaching Interests

    Jane leads the Research Methods teaching in the School of Psychology and has particular interest in multivariate statistics and randomised controlled trials. She developed and teaches an elective in Behavioural Medicine and contributes to a number of Health Psychology modules on offer in the School. She is current Director of the Structured PhD in Psychology and Health where she has developed a number of modules includes Health Services Research. She lectures in the area of Mobile Technology and Health Behaviour  to the MSc in Preventive Cardiology.
