Biography

John is Head of School and Director of the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology at NUI Galway.  He is an Associate Fellow and a Chartered Forensic & Clinical Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS). He is a Registered Clinical Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). He completed the University of Glasgow/ NHS Scotland professional training scheme in clinical psychology in 1997. He subsequently took up a lectureship in Forensic Clinical Psychology at the University of Edinburgh/The State Hospital. He was employed as a Senior Clinical Psychologist with the Irish Prison Service for four years prior to joining NUI Galway in 2004. He was awarded Chartered Scientist status from the British Science Council in 2007. In his professional practice he specialises in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), criminal casework, and clinical risk assessment. He also provides a clinical and forensic consultancy service to various bodies including criminal justice and investigative agencies. His professional and research interests lie within the area of forensic clinical psychology and include such topics as psychopathy, clinical risk assessment, PTSD, and investigative psychology.John is a member of the Research Ethics Commitee, Ability West, and is a member of the Psychological Support Services Commitee, Cancer Care West.
