Biography

Dr Jonathan Egan, Deputy Director of the DPsychSc in Clinical Psychology and Lecturer above the bar in Clinical Psychology completed both his BA in Pure psychology (1992) and MA in Applied Psychology (1993) at UCD. He then went to Illinois and trained in behaviour analysis and therapy.  In 1997 he completed the M. Psych. Sc, (Clin. Spec.) at UCD. He  worked with Child and Family psychology services in Co. Laois and subsequently became the Senior Clinical Psychologist with the Adult Mental Health services (1999). He  worked as a Senior Child and family Clinical Psychologist in Athlone (2004). In 2000, Jonathan became the founding Director of Counselling for the Arches Adult Counselling Service for survivors of childhood abuse and neglect.  He became a consultant and co-author to the UCD studies on adults psychological adjustment to institutional care in their childhoods. This study was commissioned by the Commission to Inquire into Childhood Abuse. Five peer review papers have now been published in connection to this study. He completed his dissertation on "Burnout in female counsellor/therapists of the National Counselling Service" (Hull, 2007).  In 2008, Jonathan became a Principal Clinical Specialist Psychologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Dublin where he worked in Liaison Psychiatry and Cardiac Rehabilitation.  He has supervised over 20 trainee psychologists and served on the Committee of the Clinical Division of the Psychological Society of Ireland between 2005 and 2015. He made tenure in February 2015 to as the Deputy Director of the Doctorate Programme in Clinical Psychology (DPsychSc). He now consults with the Pain Medicine Dept. at University College Hospital Galway.

Research Interests

Jonathan is interested in developing reflective scientist practitioners for the field of Clinical Psychology. 

He also has an interest in PTSD in people who have experienced trauma during childhood, as well as the effect this has on the psychologists working with them.  He is currently interested in an adult's perception of their ability to express themselves emotionally as children to their parents or caregivers and how this may affect their relationship with food intake or emotional eating. 
  • NUI Galway’s Millennium Research Fund recently approved a 14,750 euro grant to further study this phenomenon via a mixed methods approach

Jonathan also enjoys examining the therapeutic exchange between client and therapist, as well as whether a given approach is effective or not. 

Jonathan's interest in Health Psychology naturally developed from his move as a Director of Counselling for abuse survivors to a principal clinical specialist in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme in Dublin.

Jonathan was invited in 2012 to become an external examiner on the new Doctorate in Counselling Psychology Degree course in Trinity College Dublin.  He partook in their first set of Viva Voces for this degree in August 2012. He will continue in this role for three years. 
University of Edinburgh
Jonathan was invited in 2011 to become an external examiner for the Doctor of Psychological Science in Clinical Psychology and the Masters in Clinical Psychology qaulifications at the University  of Edinburgh and has completed two sets of VIVA VOCE examinations to date. This is a 5 year appointment.

  Description

Burnout prevention training workshops- these have been sourced by local NGO organizations working in the area of intellectual disability in order to facilitate increased work engagement and self care in frontline clinical  staff (Ability West & Brothers of Charity: two separate trainings provided in January and February, 2012)
